So, for anyone familiar with its lineage - the entire RTS community - AoE III was expected to be spectacular. In the last ten years, the Age series and the Warcraft series were by far the best RTS games available. It's a solid game, fun to play, no glaring problems, some minor innovations that add to the experience, but it's also the third incarnation in an incredible series of real-time strategy games. And that's precisely the problem with Age of Empires III. Overall, the Age of Empires III trailer is mostly honest, and depicts a game worth getting excited for – the exact same game you'll find in Age of Empires III itself.The weight of expectations handicaps some games, making it difficult to fully appreciate a good game when you expected a great game.
Therefore, some of the details of gameplay may not be as the trailer makes them seem! Furthermore, there are several cinematic portions that are not based on the gameplay itself, which is common in trailers but might be seen as deceptive. Some gameplay features are not shown clearly in the trailer particularly, although the game's infrastructural portions and so on are depicted in the trailer, the resource management aspects of the game are not well-represented in the trailer. It does a good job of showing both the thematic parts of Age of Empires, where the player progresses through the 13th through 17th centuries as an empire-building warlord, and the gameplay parts, where the player builds up resources and an army to crush their foes. It features a good amount of gameplay footage, along with delineation of the game's biggest features. With that in mind, the Age of Empires III trailer is exemplary. Although a trailer may not sound too interesting, keep in mind that trailers are where developers first try to sell the game – and where they show off its most interesting features. As it happens, Ensemble Studios (via its publisher Microsoft) decided to bundle the game's trailer up as a neat download, which is available where this review is posted.
